Several years ago, while pondering on my life (including some personal struggles with how to lead a cultural change effort in a medium-size, private business), I came upon M. Scott Peck's book, "The Road Less Traveled."

It didn't take long for me to discover some "tips" with great potential for taking on problems.

Perhaps, my greatest "takeaway" from reading the book was the discovering of what Peck referred to as the "Tools of Discipline." Tools for problem-solving and for personal growth & development.

The Tools are:

  • Delay Gratification

  • Accept Personal Responsibility (in you perceive there is a problem, you are part of the cause)

  • Seek the "Truth" (attempt to do what is "Right")

  • Balance (don't be fanatical with your strategy to deal with the problem)

I have found using these tools lowers tension/anxiety, and helps clarify what the possible solutions and personal decision-making might be best.
