Today I focus my attention on what Richard John Neuhaus has to say about the parable of Lazarus and the rich man in "Death on a Friday Afternoon."

"The parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man (Luke 16:19-31) tells of a beggar named Lazarus, covered in sores, who lies outside a rich man’s gate, longing for scraps. Upon death, angels carry Lazarus to Abraham's side (heaven), while the rich man goes to Hades, suffering in torment. It highlights the reversal of fortune, finality of judgment, and the necessity of charity and faith over selfishness."

"In essence, for Neuhaus, the story is not just a glimpse into the afterlife, but a radical call to live with love and justice in the present, recognizing that our earthly actions have eternal consequences.

According to Neuhaus, "The Finality of Choice: Neuhaus often highlighted that the "great gulf" between Lazarus and the rich man is a consequence of choices made during life, emphasizing that the present moment is the time for repentance and love, not a future, hypothetical time."

The present time is for repentance and love. NOW is the Time!

Lord, help me stay aware and alert for each precious moment I have. Help me use each moment to love others and ask for forgiveness. Amen
