Today's readings include ACTS 7:51: The climax of Stephen’s speech to the Sanhedrin, where he rebukes the Jewish leaders as "stiff-necked" and "uncircumcised in heart and ears" for resisting the Holy Spirit, just as their ancestors did. This verse accuses them of rejecting God’s messengers and killing Jesus.

"The term was originally used to describe an ox that refused to be directed by the farmer’s goad or team. When a farmer harnessed a team of oxen to a plow, to guide or turn them, he used a stick with a sharp spike and would poke them lightly on the heels or neck. If the ox refused to be directed by the farmer, it was said to be stiff-necked. A stiff-necked animal or person refuses to turn its head in order to take a different path." (Carl Middleton - Daily Reflection - The Passionists of Holy Province)

Lord, this scripture and reflection is a clear and strong reminder for us to refrain from being "stiff-necked" to your "messengers" and message. May I listen attentively to your message as delivered from special messengers like Stephen. Amen!
