For my 51st birthday in 2000 my wife gave me "Death on a Friday Afternoon", a book by John Richard Neuhaus (May 14, 1936 - January 8, 2009). And, to this day, the book has served as a magnificant spiritual development resource.
For this lent, I have decided to use the book again for reflection, contemplation, and prayer traveling on my personal spiritual growth journey.
According to Neuhaus, "Good Friday is the drama of the love by which our every day is sustained" and, in reading this book we explore the meaning of suffering, justice, of loss, of death and whatever hope there may be on the far side of death.
The exploring follows the path of what are called the "Seven Last Words" of Jesus from the cross. Given the fact I was there, firsthand, observing and experiencing the event, I reflect on what occurred and on the meaning God provided for His son's suffering and death.
Today, I spend time meditating on "The First Word from the Cross: 'Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.'"
Neuhaus uses the parable of the Prodigal Son, the son who "came to his senses" and returned home, to give focus for meditation.
Lord, may I "come to my senses" and return to You this day knowing by your grace I am welcomed and forgiven!
